Oh Looey

Friday, March 14th, 2008

The markets are crashing again, people are comparing them to ‘87 again.  That’s bullish. I bought some SSO at $62.46 today.

A poetic, inspirational, commercial – only watch this if you’re not busy. Micheal share it today in a twist of irony.  Apparently, they are all over CNBC, I don’t watch it.

Andrew & Joe – Two new friends?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

So, turns out – it was the real deal.  I owe them, a public apology, for doubting that it was really them.  I just got off a very interesting phone call with two scholarly gentlemen, not trying to scam me, and actually (I think) informally interviewed me for a roll at their new fund.    Apparently, it’s going to be based on the Jones’ model.   Joe recommended reading The wisdom of crowds & Tipping point, I certainly will. We talked about Ralph Wagner & Howard Lindzon, Warren Buffett, Sandvine & my dad.  I told them about the value I see in twitter, I think they might sign up.  If I know you personally, and you are a Canadian Engineer, they are looking for analysts – for their new fund.  If you’d like a referral to Joe, let me know, and I may forward your resume.

Incase you never heard of ‘em – ProShares: Double Long or Short

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Ultra ProShares are leveraged ETFs that seek double, or more, than the return of other bench marks or sectors.  Some of them do the inverse, or double the inverse too.  I think it’s something every investor should know about.  I know I wish somebody would have thought me about them sooner, or I wish they existed sooner, but none the less they are yet another vehicle to keep at arms length.  I just wanted to share the link that will get most investors started learning.

I intend to try a Double-Long-Buy-Write-Market-Making investigation into SSO.  I’ll let you know how it works out.

Leading with Humility vs Cool Kids vs Wannabe Bloggers (Update)

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I wrote this original post, when I was mad. I’ve calmed down now, and learned my lesson – never blog when you’re mad. I’ve apologized, but still waiting for one from her. She hurt me, so I swung back, I think we were both childish. I was the one who swung last, and was the most angry, so I was the smaller person. But that doesn’t belittle her original thoughts. Basically, all she did was belittle my blog in a few different ways. I ranted. As, she even says “I only read you, cause I like disagreeing with you”.

This paragraph has been edited, sorry to the purists out there – the original is gone forever,

Someone important to me, that has yet to find the value I have found in the blog-o-sphere, has had some negative comments to say about some posts I have written. She reads me. But, she chooses to use verbal communication, and doesn’t leave comments online. She comes a crossed, at least to me as, generally confused about the blogging world, even though she is a blogger herself. She admits, she only has a blog so that she can share ideas regarding her design project – in an asynchronous fashion. That is, she has yet to participate in very many communities online. She talks sometimes about threatening to blog about the people writing blog posts, and about people who blog, and what’s wrong with them, and what they do. She has either pointed out grammatical or structural flaws as well as blatantly or sarcastically pointed out mistakes in my logic, which are completely my own opinion – guess what – My opinions are right, because I say so – they are just opinions. I called her a wannabe blogger, because I see a real blogger as someone that is part of a community. She isn’t part of one yet. But apparently she doesn’t want to be, so It’s not really appropriate to call her that.

Below, is the value I have found through blogging…please read the rest, it’s more valuable then the mess I made above.

The rest of the post is still in it’s original posts:

Today, I made a +50% trade in 7 minutes because of new blogger friend.

Today, I saw a unique piece of art, and made my girlfriend smile with it. It was a video of super balls, because of my friend Julia Roy, and her blogging friend/boss Josh Spear.

Today, I learned that a smart fund runner thinks there is still potential for investing in Coal, I saw an entertaining movie why he thinks so.

Today, I learned how I could outsource anything handmade via Alchemy, a service through etsy.com

Today, I got an e-mail from Joe Dowling. Could be a fake Joe, but none the less, my life is a little more interesting now.

…Those are just the things I learned, that have a punchline, today.

My point is, if I’m exuberantly not so humble, it’s only because I’m so confident, in how much opportunity and value is out there in the world, and the blog-o-sphere puts it in reach. So I’m shouting it from a roof-top, because I’m happy and want to spread it, and want my real-life circle of associates to enrich their lives along with me. My blog is a place where I can time stamp a thought. Let what people know I’m thinking. Share information with whoever wants to know. Maybe someone will leave a comment here, and tell me something innovative, that will change my fate – I encourage you to! That’s all so very powerful. Stop hating folks, and maybe you’d realize I have a point.

Don’t ask me why I’m sharing this, but cool kids, are lame kids. They need people to reassure themselves. They need people around them that think the same way, about the same stuff, and at the same jokes. Leaders are not born from cool kids, it’s the weirdos that make tomorrows leaders. It’s the ones that think, independently.

I guess I should work on being loud, and staying humble. This post wasn’t it. Maybe next time. Maybe never.

Now go Blog. Go read blogs.

Oh, and check out STV, that was sweet today

What Appendicitis feels like, Portfolio updates, China & Visa

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I’ve been getting asked recently, what does an appendix that is about to explode feel like?

Well – to me at least – it felt like getting sucker punched without the immediate impact of the punch. That is, just the aftermath. And it just hung around for hours. Then I started puking everywhere. With a fever. I couldn’t sit still, and needed any slight pressure on my body increased the pain.  It took 5 hours of this before I went to the hospital at 6 AM. About 14 hours later, I had blood tests, CT scans, urine tests, etc. etc. and was then under the knife.  I should also say, my symptoms weren’t normal – the doctors weren’t sure if I had appendicitis until after they operated.

I now have 2 or 3 inch cut in my abdomen and 6 staples holding it shut. I get them out today. It’s hard to move around, but I am healing quick.

Portfolio updates: I cut XRAY today, $37.38. one of the reasons I bought was price strength, that’s gone for the time being. I’ll buy it back, probably more expensive later. I owe the option traders a thanks, call buyers have let me reduce CROX down to about $30 and I’m still covered with calls – It’s a shoe company folks, they are going to make new styles of shoes, they will sell like other shoes. It will eventually have a PE of 15 again. I’m out of leveraged gold, I want to get back into Yamana, just the stock – SOON.

China is about to apparently open up shorting in the months to come – should be interesting, to say the least

Mark your calendars for the Visa IPO, March 20th – that’s a basket of worms for many reasons. Business Week wrote about some of the worms, I shared via google reader.

I’ve been way ahead of this trend for a while. Pen Spinning = Busy Mind

Monday, March 10th, 2008

So has Mike Sinclair, and Andrew Orquin, infact I don’t know very many Engineers who don’t do the pen spinning thing. I think it’s a sign of a busy mind. We’ve been doing it for years, for no reason. Anyway, I love this daily stock show, and just want to help spread the word. Julia does a great job! Follow the show at http://www.twitter.com/wallstriponline!

Oh and wallstriponline: you have to follow your hardcore fans back! Look at the twitter numbers on Moblogic! How old is Moblogic?

I’m Going to Do Great Things

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Inspiration is a funny thing. So is reflecting. I’ve been hospitalized the past 4 days, I’m recovering, but I had some time to think. There has been a revolution in my life in the last 8 or 9 months, it’s all because of BlueMoat, and the blog-o-sphere. I’ve met great people through the Internet; an entrepreneurial accountant, Jason and his brother Jerry – now fellow investors losing money together on Sandvine, a great real-estate agent TJ Lynch – we cut through jungle in Honduras together. Some people I’ve met face to face and others barely notice me, but that’s okay, I’m young. But the tip to “Network” I got from Larry Smith, an economist, has had such an enormous present value alteration in my life. I’ve read different books, I’ve learned new things, I’ve been more inspired, I look for more value in everything I spend my time on, etc, etc.

I’ve got approximately 95 days (found out yesterday, I have more than 2 months) off between the end of school and starting at Deloitte (start July 28th) I’m determined to do something fun, great, worthwhile, and interesting, during that time – then keep the ball rolling. A friend, Scott, wants to chat about Ashoka when he gets back from India – I’m intrigued. A fellow entrepreneur (more successful, and ahead of the curve than I) Andy over at MyTrade/ThinkOrSwim told me he is looking for talent (actually through a less than 140 character twitter message) again, very interesting, I’m sure I could do great things for them. I’m also wondering about pouring some money and time into further development of those 4 dot coms I am incubating – maybe I will! OR… OR… OR… I have until the end of April to nail something down…and I’d love to start leveraging the power of the blog-o-sphere, to find a cool project. Another idea I was thinking: I wonder If the guys over at CBS, specifically Wallstrip.com need any help, I really like that site, and I’ve got tons of ideas on how to improve it – and I’d be great at helping with content too!

Just yesterday, Howard wrote about starting something. Maybe something is in the air. Now HE could command an army of talent from the social network around him. Who knows maybe he’ll need a Mechatronic Engineer…I’ll “stay tuned”.

But the point is, I’ve been doing amazing things with the first 23 years of my life, and just because I’m getting a 9-5 (or probably 8 – 6) at Deloitte, doesn’t mean I have to quit. I won’t. Mark this post.

Patrick Awuah On Africa & Leadership

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Patrick shares some inspirational words, and uses his own inspirational stories and examples with respect to the importance of leadership. I believe his logic is sound, and can be applied and even extrapolated at the macro and micro level of organizational structures around the world. Please watch the video, and think between the lines.

Observations from Toronto

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Deloitte knows how to dazzle & recruit. Very impressive. Great moral. Amazing leaders. Well organized. Well spoken employees. I think they get people to do the recruiting, that can smell talent and ooze interesting things. They also recognize values, the same values I have. *Crossing Fingers*

Successful people have curves & stay at the Royal York. Just, wow. Everybody who was killing time in the lobby, was reading. Or using their Curve. Also, in two hours, two random people approached me just to talk. (Proof leaders share information) I was busy, but enjoyed sharing information with them.

Actors’ moms are proud. I met Mrs. Turner, Kritopher Turner’s mom. He was the runner up for the lead roll in Jumper. She runs her own healthy food services business. Her business is growing. She told me Dasani’s Vitamin Water, is a scam. She also said I should invest in Organics, to buy an organic shirt because they are comfy, and that I didn’t look nervous [awaiting my life altering interview at Deloitte]. She was heading to Mexico, with a friend.

Concierge are helpful.  Is there a problem they can’t help you solve?

The guy bagging my groceries wants to buy a smartphone. He “just needs $50, and he’s buying a Pearl”.

Leaving during rush hour and during the middle of a heavy snow, sucks. A lot.

People walk faster in Toronto. They walk the same speed I do.

Marben has exquisitely delicious and utterly random vegetables.  They serve them with great chicken.
